In the history of data breaches, the headline-making hacks– like the Adobe data breach with 150M compromised records, or the LinkedIn cyber-attack with +100M leaked credentials – are just the tip of the iceberg. Every day, huge amounts of data is replicated and circulated in the net, changing hands in online transactions across both the clean and dark web.

Whilst the latter has had a reputation for obscure password trading since the term ‘dark web’ was coined, the clean web is now becoming more and more of a danger. We’ll be elaborating on the reasons as we investigate the importance of password security in our next podcast episode.

We’re delighted to have the honour of welcoming Have I Been Pwned founder Troy Hunt (and, in a special guest appearance, our CEO and co-founder Istvan Lam) to under CTRL this week. Enthusiastic traveler, blogger, keynote speaker – Troy wears all of these hats throughout our conversation as he walks us through the site’s origin story, mission statement and the data that powers the now iconic ‘Oh no – pwned!’ search result.

Here’s an overview of what to expect:

  • The story of Collection #1 to #5, the aggregated list of email addresses and password pairs from previous data breaches; and why Troy believes that such credential stuffing methods are today’s biggest threats
  • An explanation of encryption keys from Istvan Lam
  • What Troy describes as the ’perfect storm’ responsible for the upswing and severity of data breaches
  • An overview of the lifecycle of data breaches and the rationals behind keeping them public or private
  • Advice on whether to pay out ransoms, and where the responsibility for protecting customers’ data lies
