Why title insurer CATIC trusts Tresorit for secure file exchange
Project at a glance
A daily work enabler
Whether it’s tax forms, insurance policies, extensive legal documents, or marketing presentations — the decision to use Tresorit proves itself daily. Clunky file-sharing workarounds and risky email attachments have been replaced by a streamlined, secure process using encrypted links. Internal and external collaboration — with vendors, agents, or clients — now happens in just a few clicks, with no hurdles like account creation.
As a security expert, I looked very closely for a solution for secure link sharing. Tresorit was the only provider that could meet all our security requirements. The icing on the cake? A hacking challenge proved that no one could crack Tresorit’s encryption
About the company
Secure real estate transactions
Connecticut Attorney’s Title Insurance Company (CATIC) is a U.S.-based title insurance provider headquartered in Rocky Hill, Connecticut. Founded in 1965, the company primarily operates on throughout the East Coast, Southern States and in parts of the Midwest. With 240+ employees and over 70 external contractors, its mission is clear: to provide high-quality legal protection to the real estate industry.
The challenge
Pain point #1: External data exchange
CATIC employees process a wide range of sensitive documents daily — from policies and legal opinions to tax forms. Although OneDrive served internal needs, external sharing was cumbersome and raised compliance concerns.
It was a deliberate management decision to avoid using OneDrive for external links, out of concern that an accident might happen, for example an employee might accidentally overshare information. With Tresorit, external data exchange is fully controlled with audit logs and centralized oversight. This clear separation ensures OneDrive remains strictly for internal use, while Tresorit handles all external collaboration securely and transparently.
Pain point #2: File size limits
Claims teams often need to send large documents with hundreds of pages to claimants or partners. But email systems like Outlook impose size limits, and OneDrive wasn’t an acceptable alternative due to compliance restrictions. As a result, physical mail was often used, slowing down operations and increasing manual effort — at the cost of efficiency and customer satisfaction.
Requirements
Seamless migration, no compromises
For both internal teamwork and external file exchange, CATIC needed a solution that delivered on security, control, and ease of use. Key criteria included:
- Large file support: Ability to quickly send PDFs over 100 pages without size limits or switching platforms.
- External access without accounts: No registration hoops for recipients.
- Top-tier security standards: End-to-end and AES-256 encryption, zero-knowledge architecture, multi-factor authentication were all non-negotiable.
- Separation of internal and external workflows: Clear boundaries to maintain control over file sharing.
- Transparent audit trails: Real-time notifications and access logs for quick action when needed.
Implementation
After testing Tresorit alongside two other solutions, CATIC found Tresorit’s SecureCloud to be unmatched in both security and ease of use.
“What I love the most: external users don’t need to create an account or deal with trial logins that expire after 14 days. They simply receive a link — and that’s it, they’re in!” explained Holly Mendez, Senior Security Engineer at CATIC.
Claims department
Originally, Tresorit was introduced to support the Claims team, who struggled with Outlook’s size restrictions and were not permitted to share OneDrive links publicly. The platform quickly became essential for securely sending large files to clients on Claims matters, replacing the need to break emails into multiple parts. This not only sped up processes but also ensured confidentiality and reduced administrative workload.
Legal
The legal team also started to use Tresorit to receive policies and checks from agents, who simply upload documents into a secure folder — eliminating the need for certified mail and reducing costs.
Compliance
Building on the success of Claims and Legal, the compliance team adopted Tresorit for handling highly sensitive tax documents including 1099s and bookkeeping files. By leveraging the File Request feature, agents securely submit documents via upload links. Files are then automatically processed and archived through integration with the organization’s document repository software. This has greatly improved productivity and eliminated the risks of email size limits or insecure transfers.
Marketing
Finally, the marketing team also benefits from Tresorit’s generous storage and sharing capabilitie and uses it to exchange webinars, videos, and presentations with external agents and partners.
Results
Everyday relief
Tresorit has transformed daily workflows across multiple departments, streamlining internal collaboration and external exchanges. In claims, what once took days by mail now happens in minutes with secure links — no friction, no follow-ups. Other teams report similar efficiency gains thanks to a centralized platform.
“The strongest argument for Tresorit? Our teams love using it. It’s secure and simple.” — Holly Mendez, Senior Security Engineer at CATIC
Security in action
Tresorit’s security-first design stood out immediately especially with phishing threats on the rise. The insurance sector is under constant attack, with increasingly sophisticated phishing attempts targeting providers to gain access to confidential data. Malicious links impersonating legitimate platforms like Dropbox, Google Drive, or Box are one of the most common attacks in this industry.
To minimize risks, CATIC has completely eliminated the use of traditional file-sharing services for external communication. “We no longer accept insecure links. Instead, we send Tresorit links — and they’re always well received.” — Holly Mendez, Senior Security Engineer at CATIC
The company also actively encourages partners and agents in their network to upload sensitive documents through Tresorit’s secure links only, reinforcing a culture of security across their ecosystem.
Maximum usability
What CATIC values most is the simplicity. Recipients don’t need accounts. Sensitive content stays protected. No training needed. No registrations. With end-to-end encryption, zero-knowledge design, and audit logs, Tresorit ensures traceability — all while keeping things user-friendly.
“We wanted full control — Tresorit gives us exactly that. And the best part? It’s so easy, no one needs training.” — Holly Mendez, Senior Security Engineer at CATIC
The human touch
In addition to its robust security, Tresorit stands out for its exceptional customer service. More than 42 months after implementation, CATIC continues to rely on Tresorit’s responsive support team with fast resolution times and a genuine openness to feedback, even across time zones.
Conclusion
Data exchange — secure, fast, and easy
In a trust-driven, highly regulated sector like insurance, choosing a secure, transparent solution pays off. For CATIC, Tresorit has delivered: combining best-in-class security with effortless usability for internal and external data sharing.
Did you know?
In the U.S., title insurance is a critical part of real estate transactions. It protects buyers and lenders from financial loss due to title defects like unknown liens, easements, fraud, or record errors.
Unlike in many countries where a land registry entry guarantees ownership, the U.S. system requires this extra layer of protection making title insurance essential.
